The Lost Art
October 31st, 2011 at 8:06 pm
Adam of Liberty Vintage in Philadelphia talks of the de-industrialization of America and the threat of loosing certain heritages and skill sets to a generation un-interested in craftsmanship. Patience with a craft, taking the time to fail and try again and again until it works is definitely something you can see waning in a face paced, instant gratification, technology driven society we live in today. I obviously can’t speak for an entire generation, but you can certainly agree with the disappearing interest in blue collar craftsmanship in favor for other hobbies and professions. Hopefully enough eyes open to the importance of preservation for our culture and heritage at large.

SPEED

Shinya Kimura has been designing bikes that break molds for over 25 years and in 2006 started Chabott Engineering.. I saw this video awhile back and it fell wayside, but I wanted to share it with you Radlands viewers now because…well the dude is fucking RAD.
From his site:
“With the rebirth of Chabott engineering (with the fancy double t’s), Kimura will continue his exploration of metal and rubber…or whatever…in new and different ways — not merely building custom motorcycles– but creating functional art by infusing his philosophy and aesthetic values into his sculpturally unique and rolling designs.”
Trajectory:Traffic Pt 2
October 21st, 2011 at 8:00 pm
The second installment of Traffic’s Trajectory aired today on the Berrics. Ricky & Mike Stien talk about the some graphics and how the history of Philly’s oddities is worked into some themes. I’ve been working with Ricky for the past 2 years developing ideas and graphics for the company and I’m psyched to be apart of the history of Traffic. Thanks Ricky and thanks to Chris Mulhern for taking the initiative and putting together a tight insight into the Traffic brand and producing such quality video work!

Trajectory:Traffic Pt.1

Why do I post every Traffic Skateboards related video on this site? Because Ricky’s my homie and Traffic is one of the last remaining pure street skateboarding companies out there. And I work for them! There was a time when skating wasn’t about anything other than leaving your house to go shred, for the sake of skating. Not for coverage, deadlines, content, sponsorship, “spot” skating, getting a “clip, fucking media culture blitz. These were different times, yes. But a part of that still exists in skateboarding and those are the people that are involved in Traffic Skateboards.

Legendary:The Gino Mixtape
October 15th, 2011 at 10:30 am
When I was a young skate rat growing up in upstate NY, me and my bros would make VHS mixtapes with favorite parts or collage all the parts of a particular pro that we could get our hands on. I had a Gino mixtape. I’d track down people with copies of Trilogy and do whatever it took to get the ultimate Gino tape. Now we have you tube ad people who have the same idea. Good thing too, because I don’t have those mixtapes anymore.
Culture Dealer

Holy shit this just hit me. And like smoking DMT, its over in a flash. For the last 30mins I listened to Michael Collins’ Dreams album. Orignally called RUN DMT, now Culture Dealer, Dreams is an emanating puff of DMT loop debris mixed with Beach Boys/60′s psych/soul-surf pop. Its magical. It’s really quite perfect. And for some reason, Woodsist missed out on releasing this, so 2 years later Michael put this out himself after he relocated to Baltimore from NY. Good for him man. Cheers. As Run DMT, Collins gave away albums on the web entitled Bong Voyage and Get Ripped Or Die Trying
, so look those up for more devil’s lettuce love.
“Dreams is composed of eleven tracks ranging from loop-based vignettes to a few more fleshed-out, traditional songs. It’s easy to be wooed by the surprisingly meaty, stream-of-consciousness pop side of this album; “Romantic” recalls radio-ready ’60s psych songs like “Crimson and Clover” and effortlessly captures the excitement and longing of young love, while the vaguely titular track, “Dreaming,” unfurls with a sense of intimacy found in a drug-like euphoria. There are also other songs that’re short and sweet, revolving around the development of a single loop, but fortunately they don’t overstay their welcome.” – Altered Zones

Data Garden
October 13th, 2011 at 10:29 am
My bud Alex Tyson (shot Radlands 1st look!) has launched a new record label and online journal called Data Garden.
In his words, “Data Garden is a journal and record label encouraging the discovery of electronic music through the windows of history, science and community. We research the heritage of primitive electronic art and explore the synthesis of biological and digital technologies as a channel of human expression. Data Garden creates a forum where new connections are made.”
Join Data Garden at the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America for an interactive exhibition exploring the relationship between plants, music and technology.
Participants will have the opportunity to wander Bartram’s Garden and connect with their natural environment through live music, performance and sculpture that blurs the distinction between biological and digital worlds.
